Undergraduate Researcher at the University of Florida

Chemical Engineering Major and Biomolecular Engineering Minor

I’m Sydney, a Chemical Engineering student at the University of Florida with a passion for biomolecular and a passion for genetic engineering.

At the Jain Lab, I work on optimizing CRISPR/Cas systems for disease detection and genome editing. My research, which I’ve presented at multiple symposiums, focuses on using CRISPR to address global health challenges. This is my primary area of research, and I’m continuing to expand on this work during my time at UF.

This past summer, I broadened my research experience as a HuBMAP intern in the Hagood Lab at UNC Chapel Hill. There, I studied lung epithelial cells and fibroblast subpopulations to better model lung development and disease, culminating in a presentation at the UNC Summer Research Symposium.

In addition to research, I’m actively involved in leadership roles at UF. As an Engineering Ambassador and the President of UF Engineering Peer Advisors, I mentor fellow students and promote the value of engineering education. Outside of the lab and school, I write for OneResearch, a biomedicine newsletter dedicated to making scientific advancements accessible.

I’m passionate about contributing to the future of biotechnology and excited to connect with others in the field!
